Narrative Summary - June 1997

June 1997 was cooler than normal, averaging 68.5ºF, 1.2º below normal (69.7ºF), with
the period from June 18-24 averaging 7.3º below normal. The warmest June
averaged 76.8ºF (1992); while the coolest averaged 63.0ºF (1953). The following

Precipitation for June 1997 totaled 0.46 inch, 121% of normal (0.38 inch). The wettest
June, in 1950, received 2.92 inches; while the driest, in 1986 and earlier years,
received only a trace. Total precipitation since January 1, 1997 is 3.58 inches, 113%
of normal (3.18 inches).

May 1997's average wind speed was 8.2 miles per hour (mph), compared to a May
normal of 9.1 mph. The peak wind gust for the month was 36 mph recorded on May
31. The windiest May on record averaged 10.7 mph (1983); while the May with the
lightest winds (1957) averaged only 5.8 mph.

June 1997's average wind speed was 9.0 miles per hour (mph), compared to a June
normal of 9.2 mph. The peak wind gust for the month was 48 mph recorded on June
17. The windiest June on record averaged 10.7 mph (1983); while the June with the
lightest winds (1950) averaged 7.7 mph. The highest peak gust ever recorded during
the month of June was 72 mph in 1957.
