Narrative Summary - January 2000

January 2000 was slightly warmer than normal, averaging 32.9ºF, 1.6º above normal
(31.3ºF). The warmest January occurred in 1953 and averaged 42.5ºF, while the coldest
was 12.1ºF in 1950. There were no daily temperature records established in January 2000.

Precipitation for January 2000 totaled 1.09 in., 138% of normal (0.79 in.). The wettest
January, in 1970, received 2.47 in., while the driest, in 1977, received 0.08 in. Snowfall
for January 2000 totaled 8.2 in., compared to a normal of 3.9 in. The snowiest January,
in 1950, received 23.4 in., while January 1994 did not receive any snow. Snowfall for
the 1999-2000 winter season to date is 8.8 in., compared to a normal through January of
11.5 in.

The average wind speed for January 2000 was 7.0 miles per hour (mph), 0.5 mph above
normal (6.5 mph). The windiest January on record averaged 10.3 mph (1972), while the
January with the lightest winds (1985) averaged 2.9 mph. The peak gust for the month
was 53 mph on January 9. The record wind gust for January was 80 mph in 1972.
